The sanitary center closes the hematology plant to try to restrain the outbreak Zaragoza the hospital Miguel Servet de Zaragoza has had to close its plant of hematology by the death of three patients in the last weeks, due to a legionellosis outbreak.
At least other two people are being watched before the suspicion that they can suffer the disease. The origin of the outbreak is in the own hospital, according to the analyses of its specialists. The first case detected month of September the past.
The medical director of the Servet, Ricardo Canals, assured last night that already all the measures necessary have been adopted to control the outbreak.
The three deceased, two women and a man, were people "with low defences", according to Canals, that also indicated that the normal thing is that those are the patients that take the bacterium to the hospital. "In this case it has not been thus and we are convinced that the outbreak is in the hospital", admits the medical director. The outbreak has communicated already to the sanitary authorities, so and as they establish the sanitary protocols when it passes away more of a patient by this bacterium in an inferior period to the six months. Legionella is a bacterium that causes a serious type of neumonía and can also damage the liver, the kidney, the brain and tracto intestinal. The infection that it causes calls legionellosis, and the risk of contracting increases it with the age, the tabaquismo, the respiratory diseases and certain tumors. In September and October of 1996, a outbreak in Alcala de Henares (Madrid) affected 224 people and killed to 11 of them, almost all already serious before the infection.
The hospital Miguel Servet has sent to samples to the laboratory Carlos III of Madrid, but before knowing the results it has taken measures like hyperchloranation the water and putting under high temperatures the conditioned air conduits, that transmit the bacterium. The direction of the hospital has recommended that discharges weekend from the hospital, because that plan of shock can cause upheavals to the entered patients. The center is probably in one of the services of the hematology plant. "the Servet is a constructed hospital to pieces" recognizes the medical director.
The direction of public health of the General Delegation of Aragón indicated yesterday: "one has become what there is to do in these cases. It is all writing, they mark the protocols to it and these have been fulfilled ".
The hospital Miguel Servet is center of reference not only for Zaragoza, but also for Huesca, Teruel and the Rioja. It has a capacity of 1,300 beds. The hematology plant is located in one of the three buildings, the one that lodges the General Hospital. The Aragonese health authorities do not think that it is necessary to evacuate all the building. Part of the nervousness must to a previous outbreak of legionella that affected in the Eighties to several entered officials of the Army in the regional center of control of Zaragoza, that it had to close itself during several months.
Another death in Alicante Valencia The most recent case of death by legionella has been registered in Alicante, where the last week the health authorities ordered the closing of two training centers after the death of a professor. The educational one, a university professor of Music, died in September due to one neumonía caused by legionella, which motivated an inspection in the Secondary Institute of 8 of March, in that it gave classes.
After being detected the presence of the bacterium, Health ordered the closing. The order affected the mentioned center, that shares facilities with an extension of the Conservatory of Music and the School of Dance. During both days that were closed, the educative dependencies were put under a plan of disinfection shock that was centered in the cloración of the water conductions. The unions criticized the slowness of the Administration and the fact that this one did not inform to them.

The number of affected by the outbreak of infection by Legionella detected in the Clinical Hospital of Zaragoza, and that was made public Friday the past, already promotes 10 people, after in the afternoon-night three cases were diagnosed yesterday more, informed health sources today.
Until they were yesterday the seven people entered hospitals of the Community as a result of the outbreak of _ Legionella _, although it has been detected that also they are related to the outbreak a neighboring man of 77 years of Ejea of the Horsemen (Zaragoza), that has been entered in the UCI of the Clinical one and which it was entered in the sanitary center in the first fortnight of June, and a young woman who has happened "of plant to the UCI of the center", in addition to another man. This patient, who was entered in the Clinical one of Zaragoza the past 18 of May, undergoes inmunodepresión problems and the worsening of its state of health has forced his happens to the UCI. The other patient to whom its relation with the outbreak has been determined is a patient of 80 years who at the moment is entered "plant" in the Hospital Miguel Servet de Zaragoza and who suffers of legionellosis to have happened through the Clinical one during the possible period in which the outbreak was developed, indicated the same sources.
This way altogether they are the ten affected people, of whom six are entered in UCIs. Thus, in the Clinical one of Zaragoza seven are entered affected, of which five -4 men and one woman remain in the UCI, while other two women remain in plant. In the Hospital Miguel Servet the new case detected yesterday is entered in plant and San Jorge de Huesca a man of 75 years in "stationary" state but in the UCI, whereas the Hospital Ernest Lluch de Calatayud remains in plant a man of 87 years "who evolves favorably". All the cases are related to the Clinical Hospital University Lozano Blesa, some patient were entered and others are workers of the center or took care of ill people.
Public health has detected the bacterium in two cooling towers of the Clinical one and investigates twelve towers nearer the Hospital, as well as possible cases of legionellosis that could be related to the outbreak. In this sense, from the Department of Health of the Government of Aragón it has been explained to EFE that study up to seven attentions by legionellosis registered in Miguel Servet de Zaragoza the last week, although two of them correspond already with given patients of discharge, although one of the affected ones is entered in the UCI of the center. T
he fact that the affected ones are almost all people who enter and leave the Hospital makes suspect that they have been infected in the zones of step, in the outside of the building, near where the towers are located, or when opening the windows.

Update 23 June 2004
TWO
NEW CASES
The people affected by legionella in Zaragoza
rise to 28
ZARAGOZA.
Public health of the Government of Aragón has detected two new cases of legionella in Zaragoza, reason why the number of affected month in the last promotes 28 patients, of whom 16 are related to the "communitarian outbreak" appeared in the Clinical Hospital University Lozano Blesa.
Sanitary sources have informed into that of the 16 patients related to the outbreak of the Clinical one, 14 are hospitalised in different centers from the community, one person has died.
Both new cases are two patients who were hospitalized in the Clinical College prior to the declaration of the outbreak.
One is a man of 56 years which day 9 entered of June as a result of a inmunodepresor process, that is in plant and whose clinical evolution is positive, and of a woman of 62 years who entered the 13 of June, by similar circumstances to of the previous patient, and that due to its good evolution already has been registered.
The active search of possible patients of legionella that day 15 started up the past, when detecting itself the bacterium in two cooling towers of the Clinical one, has taken to the confirmation of these two new cases in patients who remained entered in the University Clinical Hospital prior to the declaration of the outbreak.
The technicians of Public Health of the Aragonese Government have informed into the confirmation of three cases related to the outbreak, that were in study and which they add themselves to the eleven confirmed until Tuesday.
These three are two women of 73 years and a man of 83 who was entered with symptoms of legionelosis and that reside in the proximities of the hospitable center or frequent their environs.
Therefore, until the moment, the number of affected in relation to this outbreak and that remains hospitalized is of 14, of which six remain entered in units of intensive cares (five in Clinical, of which two are with serious prognosis, and the one in San Jorge de Huesca).
The seven remaining cases that they bear relation to the outbreak from the Clinical Hospital find entered in plant with a "favorable evolution" distributed in different centers from the community.
The investigation opened by the Main directorate of Public Health as a result of the outbreak includes/understands a survey epidemiologist on other cases of legionelosis diagnosed in the last month in Zaragoza, 16 until the moment, of which 12 are confirmed and four are suspicious. Of these, six are being taken care of in hospitals of the Aragonese System of HEALTH , after this Wednesday has been discharged from the hospital one of the patients who remained entered in the Hospital Royo Villanova and whose relation with the outbreak of the Clinical one is discarded.
UPDATE

18 ASSIGNED TO THE
OUTBREAK
Three cases elevate more to 34 the affected
ones by legionela in Zaragoza
ZARAGOZA.
Public health has notified three cases more of legionella in the province of Zaragoza, with which they ascend to 34 affected in the last the month, of which 18 are assigned to the outbreak of the University Clinical Hospital and in other eight it still works to determine the possible relation.
The morning of Thursday, the chief of a main directorate of Public Health of the Aragonese Government, Luis Go'mez, informed into who were 31 cases of legionella, into that 17 were associate to the outbreak of the Clinical one.
In the evening, the number of affected was increased in three more, according to the Main directorate of Public Health, that has notified a new case of legionella directly related to the outbreak associated to the contamination of two cooling towers of the University Clinical Hospital at the beginning of this month.
One is a man of 83 years who remains entered from those dates in the mentioned sanitary center, informed health sources.
With this last update of affected data the number of until now by the legionellosis outbreak rises to 18, of which one passed away Tuesday the past, another one was registered yesterday and 16 follow hospitalized, of which six remain in units of intensive cares, two of them in serious state.
On the other hand the number of patients of legionella in the province of Zaragoza related at the moment to this outbreak is not of 16.
The two last notifications correspond to a man of 63 years entered in plant in the Hospital Miguel Servet, of Zaragoza, to which legionellosis has been diagnosed and whose relation with the outbreak is in phase of study, since it was taking care of to a person entered in the Clinical one during the dates in which foreseeably the contamination took place.
The other communicated case this same afternoon corresponds to the one of a man whose entailment with the outbreak has discarded totally because it resides in a population of the province and it has not had any recent stay in Zaragoza.
Update
ZARAGOZA
25 June 2004.
The University Clinical Hospital has notified to the Main directorate of Public Health the death during the night of a patient of legionellosis related to the associated outbreak of the detected contamination the last week in the cooling towers of the health center.
One is a man of 83 years who had admitted previously to the hospital, informs the Aragonese Government. Until the moment, the number of cases with the outbreak of legionella is 18, of which two have passed away, other two already have been registered and 14 follow hospitalized. Of these patients, four are in the UCI -- two in serious state
The investigation opened by the Services of Monitoring Epidemiologist of the Main directorate of Public Health as a result of the outbreak related to the Clinical Hospital also includes/understands the study of other 16 cases notified during the last month in Zaragoza and its province, in principle related to the outbreak although in eight of them has not extended the survey epidemiologist. Of these people, 13 are hospitalized in different health centers and three have been registered.
PP requests to summon the Permanent Delegation of the Congress so that Salgado informs on the outbreak of legionella in Zaragoza
MADRID, 7 July 2004
The Popular Group in the Congress has asked for the call of the Permanent Delegation of the House of Representatives so that it decides the appearance, in this month of July, of the minister of Health, Elena Salgado, in relation to the outbreak of legionellosis registered in the Clinical Hospital of Zaragoza, that has cost the life to six patients. In particular, the Popular Group protests that Salgado goes to the Commission of Health and Consumption to inform into this outbreak, as well as of the measures that go to adopt to palliate and to prevent their consequences.
In this sense, the attached spokeswoman of the Popular Group in the Commission of Health, Mercedes Roldós, criticized the lack of "sensitivity" demonstrated by Salgado when not being transferred to Zaragoza "to verify" in situ "" how the outbreak is being legionella that has cost the life to six people. Roldós recuerdó, in declarations to Europe Press, that a delegation of the PP went to Zaragoza day 1 the past to be interested in the state of the hospitalized patients and in the protocol of performances to follow. Roldós criticizes that Salgado has not appeared in the Congress to inform on this case, an appearance that the Popular Parliamentary Group solicitd one week ago with urgent character. In the same line, it remembered that the PP has presented/displayed 20 questions to the Ministry of Health in relation to this outbreak.
Among them, the popular attached spokeswoman mentioned relative to the location and the protocols of maintenance of the cooling towers of the Clinical Hospital of Zaragoza, corresponding to the hospitalization area, where the center was detected. These towers, according to explained Roldós, started up in May, after being shutdowns during the winter, in a control of day 7 of June was detected that they were contaminated and, after a corresponding disinfection of the same ones, in a later made analysis two weeks later, "returned to be contaminated". Also, it criticized that from the Council of Health of the Government of Aragón one has occurred by controlled the outbreak of legionella when Monday a new death was registered. In this sense, Roldós it denounced that Salgado is not had displaced to Zaragoza to know the procedure that is being followed in the so most important subject ", with six passed away people" and, while, it is dedicated to present/display a guide on the good clinical practice or a campaign on salmonella, "whose normative measures already have been developed for a long time".

Public
health will again analyse the network of supplying of the locality in which
other five have been registered affected from the past month of January
A man of 71
years, resident in the zaragozana locality of Borja, remains entered in the Unit
of Cuidados Intensive (UCI) of the center after pneumonia by legionella was
diagnosed to him, according to informed yesterday the Aragonese Service of
Health (SAS). With this one, already they are the six cases registered in this
locality from the past month of January, which has caused again a certain
restlessness between the population.
in fact, and with preventive character, the
technicians of public health have begun to analyse the state of the network of
water supply of Borja, since already they made at his moment in April and May
after the last patient registered with legionella, although in that occasion
obtained negative results.
The
university Clinical hospital of Zaragoza confirmed yesterday the diagnosis,
although they insisted on which the state of the patient is optimal. " the old
one evolves favourably and it is not afraid for his life " , according to
indicated sources of the Aragonese Service of the Health to this newspaper.
In addition,
the technicians of Public Health of the Aragonese Service of Health (SAS) have
initiated the study of this case to know their origin, by means of the
corresponding survey and the taking of samples in the address of the affected
one. In addition, and although it is about single affected and which in the last
analyses conducted has not detected the presence of legionella in the supplying
network, the fact that they have occurred other cases throughout this year
(five) advises to control, with preventive character, the hygienic state of the
deposits and the network of potable water supply.
Water
samples
In
collaboration with personnel of the City council of Borja, the technicians of
Public Health have taken samples from water and calcification in different
points from the system of distribution that will allow to determine the
existence of this bacterium and, in that case, to recommend the measures of
adapted prevention and control more.
As a result
of the diagnosed cases previously, the potable water network was cleaned and
disinfected and the existing cooling towers in Borja were controlled.
Legionella
is present in natural means as it leaves from the bacterial flora of rivers and
lakes and in favourable conditions can be quartered and be multiplied in the
circuits of water supply and in the facilities of refrigeration. Its propagation
in the atmosphere is carried out by aerosols like sprinklers, showers or cooling
towers.
Legionella
is not transmitted by contact between the people nor by the water ingestion, but
that penetrates in the organism by the respiratory channels, when inhaling the
microdrops in which it is, being able to produce an acute respiratory disease
(pneumonia).
The city council applies all the measures
The mayor of Borja, Luis Maria Garriga, was
sorry yesterday that another new case of legionella in its locality had been
registered and assured that consistorio is applying all the health advice
recommended by the technicians of Public Health. " It is necessary to verify if
some colony of legionella in some hidden space of a pipe or in some cooling
tower exists. But in fact we continued deepening in the measures that indeed
already came making. Of hyperchlorination periodic form the water " .
The last year 16 cases of legionellosis were
diagnosed in Aragón, just such that have been registered in these nine months of
the 2001. The locality of Borja has been object of a special attention on the
part of the health authorities because it has originated six of these 16 cases.
First month of January took place the past, in a
zaragozano that went ends Borja the week. In April a outbreak with three
affected women was registered, on whom two lived in the residence on old on the
locality. One of them passed away. Finally, the 25th of May passed away another
man, a indigent, that days before had entered the same residence coming from
Zaragoza and, apparently, already underwent this affection when it arrived at
the center.
