Wave's new MAK plastic injection kit is the first completely new MAK kit for 20 something years. Moulded in a milky white plastic, the parts are flash free and free from pin depressions. The plastic seemed hard at first glance, almost a bit brittle. Having said that, the parts are actually held to the sprues by a rather thin piece so you should be able to get away with a sharp hobby knife or good pair of side-cutters. Decals are nicely done although I havent yet tried them but they look to be of good quality. The wires, springs and metal rods we have come to expect in the Nitto kits are all gone, replaced with a sprue of rubber fittings for the joints and hoses. The joints are passable but die-hard MAK modellers will want to replace the hoses with metal springs. The kit is marketed as a snap fit kit but the fit of parts is very good.. Of course gluing them together should always be considered if you want seamless parts.
Also missing from the WAVE kit is the data/camouflage card and suit information that was printed on the bottom of the old Nitto boxes. Shame, as these sort of made the Nitto kits stand out from any other model on the market. I guess I shouldn't complain as I never expected to see a new plastic injection MAK kit ever again.
We can expect more AFS variants judging by the sprue lettering below. Missing are sprues C, G, H and I. Presumably these are for the variants such as the MkI and MkII, Archelon, Snow AFS and SAFS prototype. The kit comes with four clear visors, all differing in shape so this would suggest the list above is provided for in future releases (Archelon does not have a clear visor).
We hope to do a comparison review against the original Nitto AFS soon.
